August 20th we had the opportunity to experience a portion of the “Hagen Show”. This is a yearly cultural show where many of the surrounding tribes gather to show their cultural heritage. Each tribe that participates dresses up in their native festival outfits and dances/sings in front of judges and spectators.
In the morning, the tribal groups gather on the lawn outside the event and work on getting dressed. Getting ready included making face masks or painting their faces, putting together feather head-dresses, putting on leaves, and getting pictures with the tourists.
It was amazing to see the amount of detail and unique aspects involved in the cultural dresses. It was also fun to see the differences between the tribal groups. Check out the slideshow below to see a small number of the tribes we saw.
What was also fun to see was how this was a family event. The kids were adorable and it was a blessing to see the cultural heritage being passed down to the next generation.
We thought it was funny how Josiah and Benjamin were the stars of the show. Everyone, local and tourists, wanted to get pictures of/with them. Sometimes the tourists even got pictures of Josiah when he was on our shoulders (so not even being held by a participant in the show). 🙂 This slideshow has the pictures we took with some of the different tribes.
We are so thankful we had the chance to experience this cultural show and see some of the different tribes that are found in the area we live.
